National Oil Corporation has embarked on a Geophysical data acquisition over its Block 14T. In the first phase of this exercise, which comes after a gas seepage Geochemical study, National Oil has contracted Fugro Airborne Services to acquire 20,000 line km of Full Tensor Gravity Gradiometry (FTG) data over the block. The FTG survey objectives are:

  1. To derive a basement structure map, delineate fault-bonded anticlinal structures and horst blocks within the basin.
  2. Map Tertiary fault systems and
  3. Map volcanic (and perhaps salt structures if any are present locally

Gravity gradiometry is a measure of the differential acceleration of the earth’s gravity field over a unit distance. It measures minute variations in the earth’s gravitational field and is a direct measure of the density distribution of the subsurface. Gravity gradiometry data is used by oil, gas and mining companies to measure the density of the subsurface, effectively the rate of change of rock properties. From this information it is possible to build a picture of subsurface anomalies which can then be used to more accurately target oil, gas and mineral deposits.

For the FTG study an aero plane fitted with special equipment is flying the area at altitude of about 200 metres

National Oil Corporation has entered into a non-exclusive aero-magnetic study over the Lamu Embayment with Fugro Airborne services. For this project two aero planes equipped with magnetometers are currently being flown in Lamu onshore and offshore areas
